May I simply say what a comfort to find a person that really knows what they're discussing on the net. You definitely realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. A lot more people must look at this and understand this side of your story. I was surprised that you aren't more popular since you definitely have the gift.

Howdy exceptional blog! Does running a blog like this require
a large amount of work? I have no expertise in coding however I had been hoping to start my own blog in the
near future. Anyhow, if you have any recommendations or
tips for new blog owners please share. I understand this
is off topic but I just needed to ask. Kudos!

Christy, another lovely post. You sound like an amazing mom - I hope I do this well when my toddler becomes a tween all too soon!

This story made me think of the simple way my dad used to explain popularity, friendship and loyalty to me: "All your life, you'll be able to count your real friends on one hand. That's a good thing. Don't forget it."

He was right. I hope your little girl is feeling better!

Hi Laura, thanks for reading! I love your point about helping kids understand that everyone has a 'story.' You never really know what is driving someone to behave a certain way, but we are all quick to internalize it. Empathy is such an important quality that kids, all of us really, need more of, especially in today's world. Thanks for reminding me of this! :)

What a wonderful post, Chris. With boys ages 11 and 13, we too have experienced this. I love the advice you are giving her about being the center of her own universe. It takes most people well into adulthood to get this concept. That you need to be happy because YOU are happy - not because someone likes you, did something for you, included you in their group, etc. It's because you like who you are, what you stand for, the choices you make, and you do it daily.

And while it might be beyond a 10 year old's level of understanding, I also try to let my boys know that everyone has "their story", something they are dealing with at home or with other friends or family members, and this often shows up in their behavior. Not to excuse it, but to help them understand it and have empathy for others.

Keep doing what you're doing - your advice to her was wonderful!
