This story made me think of the simple way my dad used to explain popularity, friendship and loyalty to me: “All your life, you’ll be able to count your real friends on one hand. That’s a good thing. Don’t forget it.”

I love your point about helping kids understand that everyone has a ‘story.’ You never really know what is driving someone to behave a certain way, but we are all quick to internalize it. With boys ages 11 and 13, we too have experienced this. I love the advice you are giving her about being the center of her own universe. It takes most people well into adulthood to get this concept. That you need to be happy because YOU are happy – not because someone likes you, did something for you, included you in their group, etc. It’s because you like who you are, what you stand for, the choices you make, and you do it daily.

And while it might be beyond a 10 year old’s level of understanding, I also try to let my boys know that everyone has “their story”, something they are dealing with at home or with other friends or family members, and this often shows up in their behavior. Not to excuse it, but to help them understand it and have empathy for others.

Keep doing what you’re doing – your advice to her was wonderful!
